On November 19th, Hendrik Zessel, Senior Managing Director of our Vancouver office participated in the 4th annual Covenant House Sleep Out: Executive Edition, raising awareness and funds for the homeless youth of Vancouver. With nothing but a cardboard box and a sleeping bag, himself and many other community leaders spent a night outdoors to experience firsthand the hardships hundreds of youth battle each and every day on the streets of Vancouver.
The participants of this year’s event collectively raised over $683,000 to help struggling youth on the streets of Vancouver.
“I learned a lot from this experience but what resonated with me the most is the lack of resources for these kids in our community” said Zessel. “I learned that there are limited shelters in Vancouver and that each have a short shelf life for each person and so onto the next they go or back on the streets. The Covenant House has a different approach, one that understands these kids without judging them. It’s a nurturing environment that helps rebuild their self-esteem and self-worth to integrate them back into society.”
